A living wage is the hourly income that's needed to cover basic necessities like food, shelter, and transportation. It's different from the minimum wage, which is the lowest amount an employer can legally pay.
Living wages are rising in Ontario. They're up 3.4% on average, mainly due to skyrocketing rent.
📍 Highest in Ontario: GTA at $26.00/hr (up from $25.05)
📍 Lowest in Ontario: London-Elgin-Oxford at $19.50/hr (up from $18.85)
📍 Biggest increase: Windsor, Chatham-Kent, Sarnia (up 6.4% to $19.85/hr)
⚠️ Ontario’s minimum wage ($17.20) still isn’t enough to cover basic expenses anywhere in the province.
However, more employers are stepping up to pay a real living wage to their workers. It’s a simple step toward ending working poverty.
